Africa-Press – Botswana. As a professional, prompt and decisive force, Botswana Defence Force contingent deployed to the SADC Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) is replicating what it has done in previous operations, raising the countryâ€TMs flag.
Like in the past peace operations such as the United Nations Operation in Somalia (UNOSOM), United Nations operation in Mozambique (UNOMOZ), and the Southern African development intervention operation in Lesotho code named (BOLEAS), BDF troops are doing a stellar job in Mozambique.
Addressing SAMIM leadership in Pemba December 30 , President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi said given the mandate by the bloc and taking into account the bilateral agreements between the host nation and other countries, SAMIM had been working with Mozambique to achieve coordination and cooperation.
The assistance rendered to Mozambique, President Masisi said, was in the SADC spirit of collective security and responsibility to ensure peace and stability in the region, which could be attained through cooperation.
He said the combined and sustained efforts of SAMIM and other operational partners had resulted in significant operational gains, which include liberation of key areas previously occupied by terrorists.
President Masisi said it was pleasing that SAMIM forces also managed to destroy terroristsâ€TM training centres and captured numerous indoctrination materials and technological devices, thereby significantly degrading terroristâ€TMs force generation capability.
“Through the BDF contribution to the SAMIM operation, restoration of law and order has been attained which has enabled the reconstruction progress to begin in the region with significant impact to the peace dividend,†he said.
The President highlighted the importance of synergy in pursuit of attaining a stable and secure Cabo Delgado where over 800 000 people have been internally displaced by insurgents.
SAMIM comprises troops from eight personnel contributing SADC countries; Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, South Africa, United Republic of Tanzania and Zambia, working in collaboration with the Forças Armadas de Defesa de Moçambique (FADM) and other troops deployed to Cabo Delgado to combat acts of terrorism and violent extremism.
