Africa-Press – Botswana. Wilderness Holdings Limited (WHL), a renowned name in tourism, conservation, and luxury hospitality, has announced its strategic expansion to Mauritius. The move is a calculated step designed to fuel the company’s growth and fortify its operations in Botswana, where it has a rooted history spanning 40 years through its subsidiary, Okavango Wilderness Safaris (OWS).
Securing Backing and Ensuring Continuity
The relocation to Mauritius has been made possible with robust financial backing from Stanbic Bank Botswana Limited, Standard Bank (Mauritius), and Standard Bank of South Africa Limited. Despite the pivotal move, WHL has reassured that its operations in Botswana will remain unaffected, with no changes anticipated in its workforce that comprises over 1,000 individuals.
Investing in Growth and Raising Capital
Having successfully replicated its business model in seven African countries and the UK, WHL is now set to invest heavily in human resources. The company also plans to raise additional capital by migrating its holding company to Mauritius. The expansion is forecasted to bring about an increase in capital, bednight sales, and tourist visits to Botswana. This economic surge is expected to invigorate the local economy and create more opportunities for the citizens of Botswana.
WHL’s Impact on Botswana’s Economy
Over the years, WHL has been a substantial contributor to Botswana’s economy. From 2014 to 2023, the company paid P672 million to the government and P259 million in dividends to its shareholders. Furthermore, it procured local goods and services worth P1.6 billion during the same period. Despite delisting from the Botswana Stock Exchange in 2019, WHL’s recent Impact Report continues to underscore the company’s commitment to contributing positively to Botswana’s economic landscape.
