Africa-Press – Botswana. As Global Chairperson of the Group of Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs) President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has appealed to the 3rd South Summit of the G77+China to stand in solidarity with the LLDCs agenda, through a reinvigorated global partnership and support for the group.
Speaking during the opening ceremony of the summit on January 21, President Masisi said the nations were not just vulnerable but were also left behind.
He said they needed support to uplift their people, create jobs, and foster sustainable growth.
“I hope to meet you all in Kigali this June as we adopt a new, ambitious and forward-looking Programme of Action, for the next decade,” he stated.
Botswana also made a presentation about the plight of landlocked countries at the Non Aligned Movement Summit that preceded the G77+China meeting.
President Masisi said it was noteworthy that G77+China had served Botswana well in harmonising views, evolving common positions on global economic issues and advancing strategies for negotiations with developed countries.
He regretted that the quest for a just new international economic order that effectively worked for the developing world and a vision which was at the centre of the creation of the organisation in 1964 had not yet materialised.
“As it has been stated elsewhere, current global governance systems and frameworks have let the Global South down. It is unfortunate that calls for reforms of these systems and frameworks to create a fairer future for developing countries and make them reflect the realities of today’s world remain unanswered and ignored by those unfairly advantaged by the status quo,” he said.
He said the failure of these global systems and institutions had not only reversed development gains made over the decades but continued to significantly derail efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.
President Masisi said government’s journey over the past decades to ensure that Batswana were not left behind stood as a testament to how transformation for progress could be a catalyst for economic and social upliftment.
“From the foundations of our economic diversification to our robust institutions, prudent economic management, and substantial investment in human capital development, my government continues to play a pivotal role in shaping our nation’s destiny,” he said.
