Africa-Press – Botswana. As neighbours in good relations, it is important that time and again, Botswana and Zambia touch base to discuss issues of mutual relations.
In an interview, Botswana’s High Commissioner to Zambia, Mr Alpheus Matlhaku said it was in that light that Zambia president, Mr Hakainde Hichilema was in Botswana on a two-day official visit.
President Hichilema will meet his Botswana counterpart, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi January 24 to January 25 in Kasane for official talks and other engagements.
“We expect the two Presidents to discuss issues of mutual interest such as trade and agriculture. The Kazungula Bridge, which was opened in 2021 was meant to boost trade between the two countries, as such the two Presidents are likely to discuss whether it is meeting its expectations, and if not, what could be done to improve on such,” he said.
He said since the two countries rely traditionally on agriculture, it was also likely that they would discuss issues surrounding the sector.
“It would be a surprise if they do not discuss the issue. The two countries once mooted the idea of Botswana exporting beef to Zambia, with Zambia exporting fertilizers in exchange,” said.
High Commissioner Matlhaku also said there were a lot of Batswana students in Zambia tertiary institutions, which he said was also likely to be one of the talking points between the two Presidents.
He also said it was not the first time President Masisi met with his Zambian counterpart as they often met at various international forums.
