Africa-Press – Botswana. Kasane police are investigating an incident in which an anti-poaching wildlife department officer was killed by an elephant on January 20.

Kasane Police Station Commander, Superintendent James Maabong said they received a report that an officer was injured at their quarters and that they found him with head and stomach injuries and unable to speak.

He said they took him to Kasane Primary Hospital where he was later airlifted to Nyangabwe Hospital in Francistown where he died.

Supt Maabong said the 52-year-old man had stepped outside the house in the wee hours of the morning to speak on the phone when he was attacked.

He said their investigations revealed that the staff quarters were without electricity at the time, and that the thick vegetation could have obstructed him to see the elephant approaching.

Superintendent Maabong advised Kasane residents to be vigilant at all times, especially in bushy areas and at night. He also said residents should avoid walking alone.

The elephant was gunned down by wildlife officers.
