AUTLWETSE APPEALS TO BATSWANA TO RESPECT OF BOGOSI

Africa-Press – Botswana. Batswana have been urged to show respect for the institution of Bogosi.

Addressing a kgotla meeting in Serowe recently, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Kgotla Autlwetse, said some individuals were tarnishing the status of Bogosi with the intention to diminish its importance.

Minister Autlwetse said it was the important to respect dikgosi, given the vital role they played in fostering social cohesion among communities.

Citing a biblical verse; tlotlang kgosi, boifang Modimo, which translates to ‘fear God, honor the king,’ Minister Autlwetse pointed out that the institution was ordained by God, underscoring the need for Bogosi to be esteemed.

He also noted that in the pre-colonial and pre-independence era, Dikgosi held executive functions similar to those of a State President or a judge. They took care of their communities, promoted people’s welfare, and encouraged community self-reliance.

Furthermore, Mr Autlwetse said the institution of Bogosi remained pertinent in modern-day Botswana, playing a crucial role in reconciliation.

He expressed concern over politicians interfering in Bogosi matters and warned that this could divert the nation from the principles set by the country’s founders.

Member of Parliament for Serowe West constituency Mr Onalepelo Kedikilwe called on Batswana, particularly the youth, to vote in large numbers in the upcoming 2024 general elections scheduled for October.

He highlighted that the recent registration exercise, which concluded on February 3, provided Batswana with an opportunity to choose their representatives or government.
