Africa-Press – Botswana. For the past five years, government has recruited 1 084 certificate holders, 4 805 diploma holders, 813 degree holders as well as 415 interns across ministries in different positions.
Minister for State President, Mr Kabo Morwaeng revealed this when responding to a question in Parliament from Serowe North MP, Mr Baratiwa Mathoothe.
To improve the absorption of more graduates, Mr Morwaeng said his ministry had intensified the use of the Labour Market Observatory System.
He said the system created a meeting place between job seekers (graduates) and employers, including ministries, departments and agencies. He noted that ministries, departments and agencies were compelled to prioritise the use of the system to recruit graduate job seekers.
Since September 2023, Mr Morwaeng said, the employment of graduates had been temporarily centralised within the Directorate of Public Service Management (DPSM) in order to expedite recruitment.
Since inception, he said, the exercise had contributed to an increase of graduate recruitment by 48 per cent compared to the last financial year.
“Through DPSM my ministry also has a recruitment project in place which will see to the absorption of interns that are attached at different ministries, departments and agencies whenever entry level vacancies exist,” he added.
Mr Mathoothe had asked Mr Morwaeng to brief Parliament on the status of recruiting personnel with certificate, diploma and degree qualifications for government employment.
The MP also wanted the minister to state the number of interns who had been absorbed for permanent and pensionable positions in government for the past five years, and remedial actions in place to absorb more graduates.
