GABS CHALLENGES DELAY PAYMENTS

Africa-Press – Botswana. The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed delays in payments for general voter registration staff.

In a press release, the commission attributes the delays to challenges associated with the Government Accounting and Budgeting System (GABS) used to effect all payments in government.

The release says as of February 23, a total of 1 671 out of 4 641 of unemployed youth or 36 per cent had been paid their allowances. On the other hand, 1 572 of 2 526 Public Officers or 62 per cent countrywide had also been paid their dues.

“This is not a good picture and the IEC highly regrets all the inconveniences brought about by the delayed payment,” it says.

It further explains that the commission has engaged the Accountant General to devise the solution with the hope that most of the payments will be honoured by March 1.

Through the release, the Commission regrets the inconveniences caused by the delayed payments and apologises to all those affected.
