Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, also the Commander of the Armed Forces, unveiled the names of four BDF members this morning, who have been inducted on the BDF Monument to honor their ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation. This solemn ceremony was part of the Fallen Heroes Commemoration Day. Dr Masisi paid his respects by laying a wreath at the BDF Monument at the Parliament Grounds in Gaborone in memory of the fallen heroes and heroines.
The significance of the event was underscored by the recognition of the four BDF members who lost their lives defending the country’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and national interests. Among them are Major Gaolatlhe Tiro, who was fatally wounded by enemy fire on September 29, 2007, during a United Nations Mission in Darfur-Sudan. Lance Corporal Obakeng Tlhaloganyo tragically lost his life on March 11, 2020, after being shot by a poacher while on anti-poaching duty at Chiefs Islands. Lance Corporal Zikamee Kamai met a similar fate on November 29, 2022, succumbing to terrorist gunfire during a SADC Mission in Mozambique. Private Christopher Mphetlhe also made the ultimate sacrifice, being shot by a poacher during anti-poaching operations along the Chobe River.
The Fallen Heroes Memorial was observed in several places across the country, including Lesoma, Francistown, Selebi-Phikwe, Thebephatshwa Air Base, and Gaborone. Photos: Godfrey Mpuse.
