GYM ACCESSIBILITY IDEAL FOR ROAD USERS - RADISIGO

Africa-Press – Botswana. The community outdoor gym in Block 7 provides opportunity for motorists to stretch and engage in physical activity before embarking on long journeys, helping them stay alert and focused on the road.

Speaking at the handing over of the gym by Botswana Power Corporation (BPC) on Tuesday, Francistown City Council mayor, Godisang Radisigo said the facility would promote road safety and reduce driver fatigue.

Emphasising the importance of taking regular breaks during extended drives, Mayor Radisigo noted that the gym’s accessibility was ideal for road users seeking a convenient place to revitalise and refocus.

“By incorporating exercise into their travel plans, motorists can reap a host of benefits that contribute to safer driving practices and overall well-being,” he added.

Radisigo explained that exercise had been shown to improve blood circulation, which could help maintain a healthy level of alertness during long stretches of driving.

He said increased blood flow provided the brain with oxygen, promoting better focus and concentration on the road.

Additionally, the mayor said regular physical activity helped alleviate muscle tension and stiffness, which could be particularly beneficial for drivers who spent extended periods in their vehicles.

Radisigo expressed optimism that the outdoor gym would play a significant role in combating the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) that were claiming the lives of many Batswana and placing a heavy burden on the country’s healthcare system and economy.

He explained that the NDCs, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity, were often associated with sedentary lifestyle and could be mitigated through regular physical activity.

“By providing an accessible and welcoming environment for exercise, the Block 7 gym along the A1 highway offers residents and motorists an opportunity to prioritise their health and well-being,” he said.

Acting BPC Manager (Network, Services and Supply), Kemotshepile Kenosi explained that BPC partnered with Old Mutual Insurance to construct the gym.

“This gym is a testament to what can be achieved when like-minded organisations come together for a shared purpose,” he said.
