Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana is ramping up its efforts to combat the emergence of lab-grown diamonds, aiming to fend off any potential threats to its diamond industry, as stated by Minister of Minerals and Energy, Mr Lefoko Moagi.
Speaking on the eve of the 31st annual JCK show in Las Vegas, which started May 31 to June 3, Minister Moagi emphasised that Botswana, as the leading producer of diamonds by value, is taking proactive steps to uphold the superiority of natural diamonds in the market.
The JCK show serves as a crucial platform for the global jewelery trade community, facilitating business interactions, networking opportunities and knowledge exchange to drive innovation and growth within the industry.
Minister Moagi highlighted Botswana’s strategic initiatives to bolster the marketing of natural diamonds and secure partnerships with renowned retailers who have transitioned away from synthetic diamonds, aligning themselves with Botswana’s stance on the issue.
“We have successfully engaged top retailers who now advocate for the unmatched quality of natural diamonds over their lab-grown counterparts, championing Botswana’s diamond industry,” he explained.
Also, Minister Moagi said participating in the show allowed Botswana to network and learn from the best technologies and knowledge in the diamond space that future posterity will use even at the end of the diamond era in Botswana.
He said the fact that Botswana has brought in the services of President Mokgweetsi Masisi to spearhead the campaign demonstrated the countryâ€TMs serious approach to the matter.
President Masisi is expected to engage some of the major players including its partners in the diamond space and assure them that Botswana meant business and would pull out all the stops to honor its contractual obligations.
“Ke sone se Tautona a tla a bong a na le metseletsele ya diphuthego le bangwe ba ba ka nnang le kgatlhego ya go tla go bula madirelo kwa Botswana ba ikemetse kgotsa ba kopane le Batswana go godisa itsholelo ya lefatshe le go tokafatsa matshelo a Batswana,†he further stated.
While in Las Vegas, President Masisi will also file questions from various media houses, something Minister Moagi believed would amplify the Botswana natural diamond story and how far their proceeds have and continue to impact Batswanaâ€TMs livelihoods and its flora and fauna.
