Africa-Press – Botswana. Gaborone City Council is doing all it can to light up the city, says mayor Mr Austin Abraham.
Addressing a full council meeting on Monday, Mr Austin said in the previous financial year, they installed solar lights in Gaborone North, Bonnington South and Gaborone Central.
Mr Abraham also noted that over P2 million was allocated for the installation of solar street lights in Tlogatloga through the Road Fund Levy, adding that the project was completed but still under the defects liability period.
He said P11 million from the recurrent budget was allocated for the installation of solar lights in various areas in Gaborone, and that the project was awarded to two contractors, BPG Switchboards and Nala Mining.
Furthermore, he said in the 2024/25 financial year, funds amounting to P5 million under the recurrent budget were set aside for the supply, installation and commissioning of solar street lights in Phakalane. He said they were determined to ensure that all ongoing projects were completed before the end of the financial year.
He noted that the city council was experiencing challenges due to street light illumination, adding that vandalism and cable theft remained a challenge.
On human and social welfare issues, Mr Abraham said the council continued to provide social safety nets to vulnerable members of the community, noting that there had been an increase in the number of destitute persons from 328 to 334.He said graduation from destitution was moving at a low rate and that only 61 beneficiaries graduated from the programme in August 2021.
He said some beneficiaries were assisted through engagement on temporary employment, and that 24 beneficiaries were currently employed on a one-year contract, comprising of nine cleaners and 15 herdsmen.
