Africa-Press – Botswana. ‘Ngwaketse Land Board members have been urged to use anti-corruption tools and strategies to achieve a corruption free environment of management of land and drive the economic development. Effective and transparent land management together with equitable land allocation are crucial in achieving zero corruption.

Ngwaketse Land Board Chairman, Mr Bobby Tlhabiwe said this during a one day anti-corruption workshop hosted by Ngwaketse Land Board in Kanye recently.

Directorate on Corruption and Economic Crime (DCEC) Senior Anti-Corruption Officer Ms Kutlwano Chidube presented on impact of corruption on service delivery, abuse of office and bribery in the work place.

She outlined the importance of senior management being ethical and standing for what was right, adding that ethical leaders should treat everyone equally, consequences applied equally across the board and they should be consistent in terms of what they expected from the team.

Ms Chidube said corruption in land administration led to a high number of conflicts across the country and could indirectly contribute to economic inequality. The workshop she said, was an opportunity to enhance the understanding of the judiciary’s workings and foster public confidence.

She said transparency initiatives, such as equitable land allocation were crucial steps toward accountability, adding that continuous engagement was important in addressing corruption holistically and comprehensively.

She further emphasised that corruption in the workplace led to low employee morale and retention.

Ms Chidube also said that there was need for collaboration between land overseers, board members and their customers in order to fight corruption.

She added that there was need for a new culture of doing business in which the systems worked transparently and fairly, thereby earning the public trust.

She continued to pledge for support in anti-corruption fight and called for harsh penalties against such culprits. The workshop which was conducted by DCEC aimed at raising awareness on corruption, collaborations and reporting of allegations of corrupt activities.
