Africa-Press – Botswana. White cane is a vital tool for people without sight as well as those virtually impaired as it helps promote equality of lives in many ways, Botswana Association for the Blind and Partially Sighted (BABPS) Representative Mr Boutlwetse Chabaesele said

Speaking at a White Cane Safety Day Commemoration recently held in Molepolole he said the event was purposed to highlight the significance of the white cane tool to people with vision loss or blindness.

He said it was imperative for societies to recognise the abilities of people with disabilities while working towards creating accessible and inclusive spaces that foster independence.

He urged stakeholders to take part in empowering people living with disabilities in the communities.

BABPS in partnership with Motor Vehicle Accident Fund joined the world to celebrate abilities and successes achieved by people without sight, as well as their contributions to the society.

Kgosi Lawrence Mhaladi said not being able to see was a condition no one hoped for but unfortunately had to live with it for eternity.

“Let’s shed light on the power of mobility and create pathways for a more inclusive world where everyone can move forward with confidence.

No person with visual impairment should be left behind,” said Kgosi Mhaladi.

He cautioned road users to be aware of the visually impaired and the blind in order to reduce road accidents for each to reach their destination safely.

Kweneng District social welfare official, Ms Bontsheng Mpoko said it was imperative to build communities that embrace diversity where visually impaired individuals were empowered to reach their dreams and aspirations with confidence and dignity.

“Let us pledge to support, uplift and amplify the voices of visual impaired individuals in the communities,” said Ms Mpoko.

She said the International White Cane Safety Day rests on education and awareness upon the general public on road safety, use of roads by the visually impaired pedestrians as well as capabilities of both and work dependency of persons with visual challenges and their participation in their communities.
