Africa-Press – Botswana. The recent flash floods across Botswana have claimed eight lives including children and have displaced hundreds of people as per the Minister for State Presidency, Moeti Mohwasa.
In an address yesterday providing an update on the floods, Mohwasa stated that the floods continue to remain a concern and have claimed yet another life, taking the tally from seven to eight. “Sadly enough we have lost yet another person bringing the total number of people that have died to eight as of now,” Mohwasa said. The minister stressed that this is a difficult time for Botswana, as lives have been lost. The deceased persons include an 83-year-old male from Mmanoko who drowned to death, a 73-year-old male from Dovedale who died due to a wall collapsing on him, a 10 and an eight-year old from Molepolole, a 17-year-old teenager, a five-year-old from Francistown, and lastly a four-year-old from Borolong, who all drowned.All the recorded deaths are male, six of whom are citizens, whilst two are indiduals from Zimbabwe.
Meanwhile, the minister has announced that public schools will resume tomorrow, as the situation is better. Mohwasa further stated that most of the roads that were closed are now operational except for the Notwane–Jamali road. Some of the operational roads are Phakalane–Oodi, Village–Tlokweng, and Tonota–Ditladi. Though the dam’s water levels are receding the minister has advised people to remain on high alert as flooding remains a concern. “As the situation gets better, let me remind you all gore we have not escaped from the floods. Places like Mochudi and Tlokweng are still facing floods so, let’s all be cautious,” advised the minister.
