Africa-Press – Botswana. While the introduction of the use of electronic gadgets and the internet has become integral to the education system countrywide, the misuse of these tools has also become a pressing concern.

Recognising the need for responsible digital use, Cybersmart Botswana embarked on a series of roadshow activities aimed at educating learners about the importance of cyber hygiene. During his interaction with Selebi-Phikwe Senior Secondary School students, the Coordinator of Cybersmart Botswana, Mr David Moepeng, emphasised the need for smart use of the internet for academic purposes and other related matters.

He said although the tools were availed for learning purposes, it is disturbing that other learners use them to bully others while others engage in uncalled for practices.

“The internet is a powerful tool, but with great power comes great responsibility,” he stated and encouraged students to think critically about their online behaviour and the impact it could have on themselves.

Mr Moepeng highlighted the dangers of cyberbullying, sharing real-life stories and consequences faced by those who engage in some negative online interactions.

He urged that instead of tearing each other down, students can build each other up and extend respect in digital interactions.

An official from Mascom Botswana, Tirelo Keoagile, also encouraged students to avoid sharing sensitive pictures or videos online as they may lead to privacy violations. “Cyberhygiene is not just a personal responsibility but a collective effort; together we can create a safer online environment for everyone,” he said.

A security specialist from BOCRA, Angela Matlapeng, highlighted the dangers of over sharing information, which may lead to easy hacking of accounts. She encouraged students to create strong passwords as they are not easy to crack.

Miss Matlapeng said students should avoid downloading things from unescorted files as they may crack their devices.
