Africa-Press – Botswana. From performing in a humble pub in Palapye to sharing the stage with jazz legends such as Punah Gabasiane and Sereetsi & The Natives, Trevor Mabua’s musical journey is gaining momentum.
He returns with what he describes as his best work yet, a new album entitled, Mmamotse.
The album is packed with songs that celebrate Botswana’s beauty, pay tribute to the country’s current President and address social issues.
“It is my best album so far,” said Mabua, who is a teacher by profession.
Explaining the inspiration behind the album title, Mabua shared that Mmamotse was about the story of a husband’s lament over his wayward wife, a woman who took care of the village but ended up in an affair, ultimately bearing a child with a neighbour.
He also highlighted standout tracks such as Buka, a song centred around Facebook, which reflected on both the positive and negative aspects of social media. Another notable track is Gideon, also referred to as That’s My Boy, a tribute to President Advocate Duma Boko.
“I created this song as a reminder that our President is unstoppable,” Mabua said.
“When his opponents tried to bring him down last year, he defeated them all,” he added, a testament that the album would deliver messages of resilience and determination.
He revealed that he was currently working on a creative music video that would bring the Mmamotse storyline to life.
So far, the album has been launched in Francistown, receiving a positive response. For the afro-jazz artiste, this is a continuation of his work as an influential figure in Botswana’s music scene, to inspire listeners through his socially conscious music and storytelling. Next stop? A nationwide tour.
