Africa-Press – Botswana. Wheelchair tennis is a powerful tool for empowerment and inclusion, offering individuals with disabilities to participate in competitive sport.
Speaking on the side-lines of the inaugural Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) corporate tennis tournament, held at the National Tennis Centre on Saturday, the association’s president, Oaitse Thipe said wheelchair tennis also helped players to develop crucial life skills and the opportunity to represent Botswana on international platforms.
In that regard, he said it was imperative to host a one-day corporate tennis tournament to raise funds for BTA programmes amongst them Wheelchair tennis and international tennis federation world tennis tour juniors’ events. The Wheelchair tennis programme, Thipe said had a coach to remunerate, adding that players also needed transportation because of their conditions.
In addition to raising funds for their programmes, he said the mission was also to bring the corporate entities to the National Tennis Centre to interact with the association. Thipe said the number of entities that heeded the call was satisfactory given that it was their first tournament.
“Going forward I think we will attract good numbers, but at the end of the day were able to achieve our objective,” he said.
Thipe said they also managed to educate businesses about the importance of playing tennis. Further, he said they were going to organise more events later in the year, adding that they would want to get more businesses to be involved and appreciate tennis.
“For the inaugural tournament we had Botswana Post, ABSA, Alfa Direct, Bothakga Burrow Botswana and their medical partners Kalafi Medical Centre.”
