Africa-Press – Botswana. The Acting President Mr Moeti Mohwasa has reaffirmed government’s commitment to support Kweneng’s ambitions as the district aspires to be an economic hub.
Officially opening the Kweneng Economic Summit held in Molepolole yesterday, Mr Mohwasa called on the private sector to invest in Kweneng’s infrastructure and mentor its youth.
He said the summit should be a turning point, where everyone was committed to a future of shared prosperity, innovation and sustainability, to build Kweneng that inspired the nation.
“Kweneng, with its vibrant communities and strategic location, is central to our vision of a prosperous, inclusive and sustainable Botswana,” he said.
He further urged communities to engage in National Development Plan (NDP) 12 consultations, ensuring their voices shape the country’s national agenda.
“To local authorities, let us streamline processes and deliver projects on time,” said Mr Mohwasa who is also Minister for State President.
He said the district had made many strides under the Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP).
Mr Mohwasa said the Constituency Community Programme (CCP) has delivered over 332 projects since 2017, with 114 projects in progress since 2022/23, focusing on internal roads that enhanced connectivity and stimulate local economies.
He said these projects had empowered local artisans and businesses, created jobs and fostered community ownership.
Mr Mohwasa, said Ipelegeng engaged 29785 beneficiaries across 265 projects, while its Skills Development Component (SDC) trained 48 graduates in construction during the 2023/24 financial year.
He further said the Kweneng District Development Plan (DDP 9) has identified various key challenges amongst them poor road networks, high unemployment, inadequate utilities and environmental degradation.
“These are not just local issues, they are national priorities that demand coordinated action,” he said.
Mr Mohwasa said infrastructure development was the backbone of economic development, adding that the completed Gamononyane – Molepolole North South Carrier (NSC) water Connection, now supplied water to 11 villages.
He said the DDP 9 proposed further water reticulation, borehole drilling and storage tank expansion in villages like Ditshukudu, Mahetlwe and Gamodubu.
The Acting President said road projects such as the 140km Rasesa-Kgope-Lentsweletau-Hatsalatladi-Botlhapatlou-Ngware-Diphuduhudu and Molepolole bypass would improve accessibility, reduce costs and attract investors.
“These initiatives will transform Kweneng into a hub for trade and innovation,” he said.
The one-day summit brought together government, private sector and community organisations where they discussed various sectors which could be developed in Kweneng to make it an important economic hub.
