Masisi Attends EAC and SADC Facilitators Meeting

Africa-Press – Botswana. Former president, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi is in Lome, Togo for the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Panel of Designated Facilitators meeting from May 17 to 18.

A press release from the Ministry for International Relations states that Dr Masisi was appointed by the president of Zimbabwe and SADC chairperson, Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa in consultation with President Advocate Duma Boko, following a decision of the Joint EAC-SADC Summit held March 24, to appoint facilitators from each of the five African Union regions.

Dr Masisi joins former presidents of Kenya, Ethiopia, Nigeria and the Central African Republic; Uhuru Kenyatta, Sahle-Work Zewde, Olusegun Obasanjo and Catherine Samba-Panza, respectively as additional members to the panel of facilitators.

The press release further says the meeting follows an invitation from president of the Council of the Republic of Togo, chair and facilitator of the meeting of appointed African Union peace mediators in the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, for talks aimed at mediating peace in the region. Dr Masisi is expected back home on May 20.
