Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana has identified digitalisation as the pivot point for the economy to create efficiencies, access, broaden accountability and create openness as well as transparency for the citizenry. Briefing the media following official talks with his Estonian counterpart, President Alar Karis on Tuesday, President Advocate Duma Boko said this would enable the country grow its economy and improve service delivery since digitalisation had the potential to unlock opportunities across a spectrum of sectors.

He further said that Botswana was now in the cusp of achieving digitalisation, presented untapped territory which Estonia could do well to study or examine and position itself alongside through taking advantage of opportunities.

President Boko further said Botswana had plenty of lessons to offer on stability, democracy, peace and adherence to the highest principle of the rule of law.

He said Batswana during the most challenging times demonstrated resilience to work together to build a robust economy and a thriving society thus reinforcing the fabric of the nation for future generations.

Additionally, he said the country had approached every potential partner with the respect and an open learning mind.

President Boko also indicated that the excellent relations between Botswana and Estonia could be a catalyst to strengthen bonds between Africa and the European Union.

“There is need to build bridges that connect Africa and Europe and the bilateral relations between Estonia and Botswana could be just what the doctor ordered to connect the two continents,” he said.

Quizzed on how Estonia positioned itself as a powerhouse on digitalisation despite only attaining self-determination in 1991, President Karis attributed his country’s success story to good leadership and transparency in government.

“Estonia, first of all, started from nothing and achieved a lot in such a short period of time due to very good leaders. The leaders were people-centric and determined to achieve the nation’s set goals and targets, something which could also be of good benefit to Botswana,” he said.

To start their digitalisation drive from scratch, he said enabled government to aim right and invest in digital innovation.

President Karis said Estonia’s government in collaboration with the private sector, worked diligently to create an environment conducive to start-ups. He highlighted that it was through such visionary leadership that Estonia emerged as a powerhouse in the global start-up ecosystem over the past two decades and witnessed a remarkable transformation in the digital space.

He thus encouraged Botswana to concentrate on investing in innovation to address daily challenges.
