Africa-Press – Botswana. Department of Road Transport and Safety (DRTS) has extended working hours to Saturdays. This is aimed at alleviating substantial backlog and address customer frustrations caused by persistent poor network issues that ultimately affect service delivery.
In an interview on Saturday in Kanye, Chief Transport Assistant Officer Ms Vivian Dikwetla said the decision to extend services to weekends came because of better network performance during such days. With most government departments closed, she said there was reduced congestion on the system used by DRTS, enabling more effective service delivery.
She expressed concerns about how persistent network issues were adversely affecting service delivery, particularly in revenue collection. However, she noted that turnout had been low because people dedicated such time to social activities such as funerals and weddings. Ms Dikwetla confirmed that the most impacted services included vehicle registration, licensing, and roadworthiness inspections.
Mr Mogolwane Serunya from Moshupa shared his personal struggle of trying to renew his driver’s license but faced hurdles due to network outages. He called on government to prioritise addresing network problems at DRTS, highlighting that delays could lead to penalties for late services.
Mr Serunya pointed out the frustrations customers faced when traveling to Kanye for assistance and suggested that DRTS consider implementing SMS alerts to remind customers before their licenses expire. He further urged government to explore possibility of opening a new DRTS branch in Moshupa to minimise travel burdens for residents seeking services.
All services rendered on weekends include vehicle license renewal and driver’s license renewal, application of new learner’s driver’s license, renewal of learner driver’s license new driver’s license issuance and testing for roadworthiness.
