Africa-Press – Botswana. Sedilame Bosija, widely regarded as Botswana’s top goalkeeper, delivered a stellar performance that resonated beyond Botswana’s during a TotalEnergies WAFCON 2024 Group B clash against Nigeria. The match, hosted at Starde Larbi Zaouli on Thursday, saw Bosija’s remarkable skills thwart numerous scoring attempts by the favoured Nigerian side.

Despite Botswana’s narrow 1-0 defeat, Bosija’s commanding presence in goal kept Nigeria at bay and demonstrated her exceptional talent to the continental audience.

Her heroics did not go unnoticed, she previously held her ground in a similarly intense match against Algeria, which also ended in a 1-0 scoreline.

Following the game, social media platforms buzzed with praise for the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper. Even Nigerian players, including star scorer Asisat Oshoala of Bay FC in America, acknowledged Bosija’s outstanding performance.

Oshoala, who scored the winning goal against Botswana, highlighted Bosija as one of the best shot-stoppers in Africa, gifting her a playing jersey as a mark of respect.

In an interview post-match, Bosija expressed pride in representing Botswana and emphasised determination to inspire her team. “I knew Nigeria was a strong side, but as captain, I had to lead and give my team the best fight possible,” she stated.

She also shared her mental preparation, understanding her role was to be vigilant and resilient throughout the 90 minutes. Bosija’s composure and leadership on the field drew widespread admiration.

“Staying calm was crucial, panic would only have spread to my teammates, so I remained steady,” she explained.

Her efforts earned her numerous congratulatory messages, with many branding her performance as one of the best in her career.

Reflecting on her personal highlights, Bosija pointed to her performance against Banyana Banyana during the 2020 Olympics qualifiers at Orlando Stadium, which ended in a 3-2 victory through penalties. When asked about scouting interest from European clubs, she modestly clarified that she remains a Sundowns player and is unaware of any offers at this time.

Looking ahead, Bosija expressed her ambition to play in Europe, believing that such moves would not only benefit her career but also bolster the Botswana national team, which benefits from a talented pool of players. “My dream is to play abroad; it would also help us develop further as a team,” she said.

As Botswana continues its journey in the tournament, Bosija’s inspiring performance has already cemented her status as one of Africa’s top goalkeepers.
