Africa-Press – Botswana. Kanye Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) College of Nursing on Friday welcomed its new cohort of students as part of this year’s orientation.
The event, held on the college campus also marked a milestone with the introduction of two new academic programmes: Bachelor of Science in Public Health, and Higher Diploma in General Nursing.
In her welcome remarks, Head of Department and acting Deputy Principal, Ms Tshiamo Gaebuse, confirmed the successful registration of 22 students enrolled for Bachelor of Science in Public Health programme.
She also took the opportunity to commend Bangwaketse Queen, Masetsibi Gaseitsiwe for her unwavering support of the college and its initiatives.
She highlighted Queen Masetsibi’s role as patron of a collaborative stakeholder committee that included the Kanye District Health Management Team, social clubs, Village Development Committees, and the Kanye District Council.
“We have also engaged various structures to raise awareness about social health issues, particularly gender-based violence which we have already begun addressing through Queen Masetsibi’s leadership,” Ms Gaebuse said.
Taking to the podium, Queen Masetsibi offered heartfelt advice to new students.
She emphasised that public health was not only about medicine and clinical procedures but included compassion, community and crisis support.
“Public health is about offering a helping hand in times of crisis. Support each other, learn from one another, and never be afraid to ask for help. Take care of your physical and mental health, if you do that, you will be on your way to becoming a public health practitioner,” she said.
She also encouraged students to maintain a healthy balance between academic and personal life.
“Yes, we are students and we are supposed to study, but do not get glued to your books. Go out when necessary, go to church, and engage socially with others,” she said.
The ceremony closed on a high note, with students visibly motivated and eager to begin their educational journey.
The new academic offerings signal growth not just for Kanye SDA College of Nursing, but for the future of healthcare service delivery in Botswana.
