Africa-Press – Botswana. In a recent visit to the Botswana Gambling Authority, President Duma Boko shared that the regulator is preparing to significantly boost employment with the creation of over 2,000 permanent jobs by the end of the next fiscal year.
During the visit, the president was assured by Moruntshi Kemorwale, the Acting CEO of the Gambling Authority, that the sector is not only operating safely but is also well-positioned to achieve its employment goals.
With youth unemployment exceeding 27%, the new roles in operation, regulatory support, and administration will provide much-needed opportunities for young people across Botswana.
Encouraging collaboration among the team, the President urged both leadership and employees to work closely together to maximize productivity. His visit included senior government officials, such as the Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Tiroeaone Ntsima, the Acting Minister of Agriculture, Edwin Dikoloti, and Joel Ramaphoi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Entrepreneurship.
Broadening the Economy Beyond Diamonds
Botswana has long depended on diamonds as the foundation of its economy, but recent insights reveal the dangers of relying too heavily on a single resource. To address this concern, President Boko officially launched the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) on July 15 in Gaborone.
The BETP aims to diversify the economy by reducing the country’s over-reliance on diamond exports, which currently make up more than 90% of total exports. This initiative is set to promote growth in various sectors, including regulated gambling. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services, and tourism.
In May, the regulator granted licenses to 10 new operators and adopted AI-powered indicators. It also received ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Systems Certification from the Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS) in July, marking a significant achievement in its efforts to uphold high standards in gaming regulation.
