Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana President Mokgweetsi Masisi is expected to come out of self-isolation soon and resume discharging his duties as head of state.
A statement from the government said Masisi had not experienced any COVID-19-related symptoms but remained under close monitoring by a team of health care personnel.
Last week, the government announced that Masisi had tested positive for COVID-19 and gone into self-isolation at his official residence with Vice President Slumber Tsogwane assuming the president’s responsibilities until further notice.
COVID-19 infections have risen sharply in the diamond-rich southern African country since the detection of the Omicron variant late last year.
Botswana has reported 229,855 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 2,475 deaths and has vaccinated 1,034,735 people, more than 70 percent of its eligible population.
