Minister of Health Dr Stephen Modise says medicines procurement is a complex and highly coordinated process that demands careful planning, strict regulatory compliance and transparency. Speaking at a press briefing on 24 October 2025, Dr Modise updated the nation on the progress made since the declaration of a public health emergency in August 2025. He said several consignments of essential medicines have already arrived in the country and are being distributed to health facilities across districts.
“The process of procuring medicines is not as simple as purchasing ordinary goods. It requires meticulous planning, coordination among multiple stakeholders and adherence to international and national standards. Our priority has been to secure supplies that meet quality and safety requirements,” he said.
Dr Modise confirmed that the recent consignments include vital drugs used to manage chronic conditions such as HIV, hypertension and diabetes. He said the arrival of new antiretroviral (ARV) supplies this week will help ease pressure on public health facilities and allow patients to receive longer-lasting refills.
“With the ARVs that arrived this week, many patients should start receiving longer-lasting refills in the coming weeks. This will reduce congestion at clinics and ensure better continuity of care,” he said.
He added that the Ministry has strengthened coordination with international partners, suppliers and logistics teams to speed up the delivery of remaining medicines. The focus remains on ensuring that no health facility runs out of critical stock.
Dr Modise acknowledged the challenges experienced in recent months, including global supply chain disruptions and delays in shipping. However, he said corrective measures have been implemented to prevent similar issues in the future.
He assured the nation that the Ministry will not rest until every essential medicine has arrived and is accessible in all public health facilities. “Our teams are working around the clock to stabilise the situation. Dr Modise also highlighted the importance of maintaining public trust through transparency and accountability in the health sector. He said the Ministry will continue to provide regular updates on progress as the country works toward full recovery from the medicine shortages.
