Africa-Press – Botswana. Newly appointed Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Commander, General Mpho Mophuting, has promised to promote a modern, disciplined and people-centred military as he officially assumes leadership of the Force.
In his address at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks soon after taking over, General Mophuting said he accepted the role with humility and a firm commitment to safeguard Botswana’s peace, sovereignty and democratic values.
He outlined a focused agenda for his command, centred on improving leadership within the ranks, modernising defence capabilities, and prioritising the welfare of soldiers.
Furthermore, he promised to reform the military justice system to ensure fairness, while developing a clear strategy and doctrine for the BDF.
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of responsible financial management, saying the BDF must remain efficient and mission-ready.
He highlighted the need for strong cooperation with other national security agencies and international partners to maintain stability at home and contribute to regional peace efforts.
The General assured the nation that the BDF would continue to stand firm as the shield of the nation.
The handover ceremony also marked the farewell of outgoing Commander Lieutenant General Placid Segokgo, who expressed profound pride in the institution he has led, describing his service among the men and women of the Force as one of the greatest honours of his life.
Speaking at the event, Segokgo reflected on his 42-year journey in the BDF a career he said was shaped by discipline, courage, integrity and unwavering duty to the nation.
He thanked the President of the Republic for his leadership and support toward maintaining a professional and accountable defence force.
“As I retire, I am content that our strong civil-military relations built on democratic principles and accountability remain intact,” he said.
Segokgo paid tribute to his predecessors for laying a solid foundation that has strengthened the BDF’s capability over the years, and extended heartfelt appreciation to the officers and soldiers he served alongside.
“You have been my strength, my inspiration and the heartbeat of this institution,” he said, acknowledging their bravery and sacrifice in defending national interests.
He also highlighted the BDF’s humanitarian spirit, recalling the moment when officers collectively raised P10 million toward the National Pandemic Relief Fund an act he said reflected both patriotism and compassion for the people they serve.
As he formally handed over command to General Mophuting, Segokgo reiterated his enduring pride in the Force and the lifetime bonds forged through service.
“I will forever remain proud to have been counted among you,” he concluded.
The ceremony marked a new chapter for the BDF, with General Mophuting becoming the first Commander appointed under the current administration ushering in renewed focus on excellence, discipline and national security.
