Ten Young Batswana Start Careers in Graduate Program

Africa-Press – Botswana. Ten exceptional young Batswana have been selected to join the International Graduate Development Programme (IGDP), a flagship initiative designed to introduce emerging talent to Botswana’s diamond industry. Today, the graduates met Honourable Bogolo Joy Kenewendo, Minister of Minerals and Energy, in an intimate engagement session at the Ministry of Minerals and Energy building.

The selection process was rigorous and nationwide. Applicants participated in a multi-stage assessment designed to identify Botswana’s brightest minds. The recruitment phase included roadshows across the country, where young people received training in curriculum vitae writing, social media etiquette, and personal branding, equipping them with skills to succeed in professional environments. The first IGDP cohort now comprises ten graduates who demonstrated exceptional potential throughout the process.

Ms. Thabile Moipolai, Senior Vice President of People at De Beers, expressed gratitude to Minister Kenewendo for personally connecting with the graduates. She highlighted the importance of mentorship and support as these young professionals begin their careers in the diamond sector.

Minister Kenewendo congratulated the cohort, praising their perseverance and commitment in a competition that began with thousands of applicants. She described the programme as a key initiative to develop talent and foster entrepreneurship, aligning with Botswana’s broader economic development goals. “This is just the beginning of great things ahead,” the Minister said. “You have gained knowledge through this programme, and it is now up to you to shape the direction of your careers. I look forward to hearing the achievements and testimonies that will emerge from this remarkable group.”

The Minister also noted the programme’s role in sustaining Botswana’s diamond legacy. She referred to the graduates as the next generation of “diamond babies,” young leaders who will uphold and advance the country’s reputation for excellence and innovation.

The IGDP forms part of the broader Talent Development Programme established under the Sales Agreement between the Government of Botswana and De Beers Group. The initiative aims to ensure the diamond industry continues to deliver economic benefits while fostering sustainable human capital development. By combining technical training, mentorship, and leadership development, the programme positions Botswana’s youth to play a central role in the nation’s economic future.

This first IGDP cohort marks a milestone in Botswana’s commitment to investing in local talent and creating pathways for young professionals to contribute meaningfully to the country’s strategic industries.
