President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko welcomed the Director General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, during a courtesy call at the Office of the President. Their discussion focused on the importance of fair international trade and the need to protect multilateral cooperation at a time when many nations are moving toward unilateral systems. The President said these shifts affect economic stability and limit opportunities for developing nations.

He reaffirmed Botswana’s support for Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and congratulated her on her second term. He praised her leadership in global trade and her advocacy for Africa. He said her work has raised the continent’s profile and helped drive important reforms.

The President highlighted Africa’s potential. He pointed to the continent’s youthful population, its natural resources and the opportunities linked to the African Continental Free Trade Area. He said Africa needs stronger trade within the continent, improved infrastructure and increased production capacity. He said these elements are key for long term competitiveness.

He shared Botswana’s ambition to become a regional logistics and trans shipment hub. He said Botswana is stable, peaceful and transparent. He added that the country has a strong economic rating and a commitment to regional cooperation. He emphasized that Botswana is land linked, not landlocked, which creates room for expanded influence in transport and trade.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala commended Botswana’s leadership and progress. She highlighted efforts in economic diversification and confirmed her commitment to support Botswana’s trade goals. She said the WTO will continue to work with Botswana and other African states to advance development.

Botswana is positioning itself for stronger global competitiveness. The country is building partnerships, shaping policy and preparing for deeper engagement in regional and international markets.
