Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Higher Education marked a key milestone with the official introduction of the newly appointed University of Botswana (UB) Council Members, during an engagement held at the University Council Chamber. The event highlighted the Government’s commitment to strengthening institutional governance and fostering collaboration to advance higher education, research, and innovation in Botswana.

The programme began with opening remarks by Dr Daniel Tau, Chairperson of Council, who emphasized the strategic role of the Council in providing oversight, enhancing accountability, and guiding the University to fulfill its mandate in a rapidly evolving higher education landscape. Dr Tau stressed that sound governance is critical for institutional growth and sustainability.

Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Prince Maele, formally introduced the new Council members, expressing confidence in their ability to lead the University toward transformation and excellence. He highlighted the importance of strategic leadership, alignment with national development priorities, and the Council’s role in ensuring that the University remains a key driver of human capital development.

The Minister emphasized that the Council had significant responsibilities ahead and urged members to fully commit to their duties. He outlined that the Council, comprising both newly appointed and continuing members, would commence work in January 2026. Minister Maele cautioned members against involvement in operational matters, stressing the importance of focusing on governance, oversight, and fiduciary responsibilities.

A central focus for the new Council will be advancing the University toward a fourth-generation university model characterized by innovation, entrepreneurship, and societal impact. The Minister also directed the Council to fast-track the ongoing restructuring exercise, which affects staff livelihoods, and set a firm completion deadline of 31 March 2026, warning of consequences for failure to meet the target.

The newly constituted Council features technocrats from diverse fields, including academia, law, information technology, engineering, and other specialized disciplines. This multidisciplinary composition is expected to bring comprehensive expertise to the University’s governance and strategic decision-making.

During the event, Vice Chancellor Professor David Norris presented an overview of the University, outlining key initiatives to strengthen academic excellence, innovation, and institutional sustainability. He highlighted the University’s commitment to research, community engagement, and preparing graduates to meet both national and global challenges.

The programme concluded with closing remarks by Professor Richard Tabulawa, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Higher Education. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to working closely with the UB Council to deliver quality, inclusive, and globally competitive higher education. Professor Tabulawa emphasized that collaboration between Government and the University is essential for addressing emerging challenges and ensuring the institution continues to drive national development.

The introduction of the new Council marks a pivotal step in strengthening governance, accelerating institutional reforms, and positioning the University of Botswana as a center of excellence in higher education, research, and innovation.
