Africa-Press – Botswana. Learners across senior secondary schools in Kweneng region, including Mahupu Unified, Kgari Sechele, and Mogoditshane, will participate in fully structured disciplinary boot camps aimed at tackling social ills that negatively affect academic performance. The initiative focuses on building character, promoting personal responsibility, and equipping students with skills for life beyond the classroom.School supplies
The boot camp officially opened yesterday at Mahupu Unified Secondary School in Takatokwane. Principal Education Officer II for Wellness in Kweneng region, Ms. Anastacia Pholoba-Mokgware, explained that the programme targets impulsive behaviour that can harm both learners’ personal development and academic outcomes. “Since many secondary schools face similar behavioural challenges, the regional wellness office collaborated with Total Man and Journey of Life, organisations focused on learner development, to curb delinquent behaviour and help students reach their full potential,” she said.
Chairman of Total Man Organization, Mr. Reginald Setlhora, highlighted that the boot camp will address various forms of violence experienced in schools, including child-to-parent violence, which remains widespread but often overlooked. He emphasized the positive impact of the programme, stating that harmful social behaviours can be reduced through these targeted interventions. “We are optimistic that the social ills affecting schools will be yesterday’s problem once the boot camp sessions are complete,” Mr. Setlhora added.
The Acting School Head for Mahupu Unified, Ms. Dibaanyeng Seboko, expressed gratitude to parents for their support, noting that their involvement reinforces the commitment to learners’ growth. She described the boot camp as an adventurous experience, providing students with exposure to life outside their homes and normal routines. The sessions will focus on personal development, independence, and skill-building to prepare learners for future challenges.
This initiative represents a proactive approach by the Kweneng region to combine education and character development. By addressing social ills and promoting discipline, the boot camps aim to create a conducive learning environment while empowering students with the tools to succeed academically and personally.
