The Botswana Police Service (BPS) has reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to public safety and security, demonstrating resilience despite current economic and resource constraints. Commissioner of Police, Commissioner Dinah Marathe, emphasized that the organisation remains focused on building strong police-community partnerships while leveraging modern technology to ensure safe environments for citizens, residents, investors, and visitors. The BPS continues to uphold the rule of law and respect for human rights, recognizing that community trust and cooperation are essential to effective policing. These remarks were delivered during a courtesy call by the United States Ambassador to Botswana, His Excellency Howard A. Van Vranken, highlighting the importance of international collaboration in addressing security challenges. Commissioner Marathe also acknowledged ongoing concerns related to Gender-Based Violence (GBV), drug abuse, and cybercrimes, underscoring the need for targeted strategies to mitigate these risks.

This strategy has produced measurable results in crime prevention, victim support, and public awareness campaigns, particularly in tackling GBV and cyber-related offenses. International cooperation remains central to BPS operations, with longstanding relations between Botswana and the United States providing vital support. Commissioner Marathe noted the International Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA) as a key regional asset, offering specialised training in combating transnational crimes, including human trafficking, corruption, narcotics, wildlife trafficking, illicit finance, and cybercrime. BPS officers have benefitted directly from participation in programs such as the FBI National Academy, with eight officers graduating to date. These initiatives enhance operational capability and ensure Botswana remains aligned with global law enforcement standards. The United States Government has also contributed critical resources, including the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), which continues to support forensic investigations and help solve complex cases.
