Africa-Press – Botswana. Lucara Botswana has reinforced its commitment to developing both the nation’s talent and its sporting excellence with a major investment aimed at propelling local athletes onto the global stage. The company announced a dual sponsorship handover, pledging more than P1.6 million to support the Kalahari Ferrari, Ross Branch, and the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA). This investment reflects Lucara Botswana’s philosophy that the country is rich not only in minerals but also in human potential. The announcement signals a renewed dedication to nurturing athletes, providing them with the resources and opportunities needed to excel internationally. By combining financial backing with access to world-class facilities, Lucara ensures Botswana’s sporting icons are fully equipped to compete at the highest level.
The Botswana Athletics Association is set to receive a P1 million package designed to prepare national relay stars for the Debswana World Athletics Relays Gaborone 26. Of this, P700,000 will fund the team’s final training camp, while P250,000 will cover fifty per cent of the team’s accommodation. An additional P50,000 has been allocated as a contingency fund, ensuring flexibility to address unforeseen expenses. Lucara Botswana also provides pro bono access to its IAF-accredited sports facility in Letlhakane, valued at P60,000, enabling athletes to train in a professional environment without limits. This comprehensive support allows the relay team to focus entirely on performance, removing the typical pressures associated with preparation and logistics.
In addition to supporting the athletics team, Lucara Botswana has renewed its partnership with reigning world champion Ross Branch, committing P600,000 to bolster his competitive journey. Ross Branch expressed gratitude, emphasizing that Lucara stood by him even during crashes and setbacks, reinforcing his determination to secure another world title for Botswana. This financial and moral backing illustrates how targeted sponsorships can motivate athletes to achieve historic milestones. For athletes like Branch, this is more than monetary support; it is an affirmation of their talent and the belief that Botswana can produce champions capable of competing on the world stage.
The impact of this sponsorship extends beyond individual athletes. Relay teammate Lee Bhekempilo Eppie highlighted that such investment allows the team to concentrate solely on performance, fostering a culture of excellence and ambition. Lucara Botswana’s Managing Director, Ms. Naseem Lahri, in her remarks delivered in absentia, reminded athletes that they are the storytellers of the nation, tasked with showcasing Botswana’s resilience, beauty, and spirit through their performance. This perspective aligns with broader national goals, linking sports achievement with national pride and international recognition.
BAA Acting President, Mr. Oabona Theetso, underlined the significance of this support in the context of the current global economic climate, noting that investing in people creates a legacy far more enduring than any mineral wealth. Lucara Botswana’s commitment demonstrates a strategic vision that combines talent development, national pride, and sustainable sporting infrastructure. As the athletes prepare for major competitions, the focus shifts to execution, with resources, mentorship, and facilities all aligned to maximize performance. Botswana now stands poised to showcase its talent to the world, proving that strategic investment in sports can elevate both individuals and the nation collectively.
