Africa-Press – Botswana. The Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) has assured the nation that the proposed Zotus Smart City project in Ghanzi is being handled with full transparency and strict adherence to due diligence. The project, which aims to develop a Dubai-style smart city, is designed to integrate agriculture, logistics, renewable energy, aviation, and tourism at no financial cost to government. BITC Chief Executive Officer, Mr Keletsositse Olebile, highlighted that the initiative will stimulate economic growth while attracting investors and creating employment opportunities.
Mr Olebile explained that the project, initially proposed near the Okavango Delta, was relocated to Ghanzi following consultations and environmental considerations. The new location at Junction 44 was chosen to ensure minimal ecological impact while leveraging strategic connectivity for logistics and tourism. He emphasized that the relocation reflects Botswana’s commitment to sustainable development and responsible urban planning.
The CEO noted that Zotus first engaged with Botswana in 2020 and has since participated in major international investment platforms, including the World Economic Forum in Davos. The initiative has progressed through several non-binding Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with key stakeholders, including the Office of the President, the Trans-Kalahari Corridor, and the Ghanzi District Council. These agreements demonstrate the project’s alignment with national economic priorities and regional development strategies.
Mr Olebile added that the Zotus Group will act as project manager, mobilizing investors to fund the development, which will cover approximately 3.5 kilometres of land. He stressed that comprehensive due diligence has been conducted, with all relevant government agencies consulted to ensure compliance with national laws and governance standards. The CEO clarified that no binding agreement has yet been signed, but the government has expressed willingness to support the project due to its strategic economic value.
Construction of the Zotus Smart City is scheduled to begin in 2026. The initiative is expected to position Botswana as a hub for innovation, investment, and sustainable development in Southern Africa. By integrating multiple sectors into a smart city framework, the project aims to boost economic diversification while attracting international investors and fostering local enterprise.
The BITC has assured the public that all steps are being taken to maintain transparency, promote accountability, and ensure the project delivers tangible benefits for the nation and its citizens.
