Africa-Press – Botswana. Jwaneng Galaxy ladies are winners of the 2024/25 Jwaneng Mine Southern Region Women’s Football League.
The victory secures their position to represent the region at the upcoming DTCB Southern Block Playoffs, scheduled to take place on May 24-25 in Gaborone. Fixtures for the playoffs are expected to be announced later this week.
In a decisive showdown at the Baitirile grounds in Moshupa on Saturday, Galaxy showcased their dominance over third-placed Maletamotse FC, clinching the title with an impressive 4-0 victory. Despite both teams finishing the season with 46 points, Galaxy’s championship was assured by a significantly superior goal difference of approximately 68 goals. The team received P15 000.
Two-time defending champions Zodiac Collabo Girls finished in second place this season after securing a 2-0 victory against Kanye Swallows at Mathaithai grounds.
In a related development, Orapa United emerged victorious in the Women’s Football Northern Block tournament held in Kasane on Sunday and is preparing to face champions from the other three blocks next month. Orapa United showcased their prowess in the opening match against the Chobe region’s Tornado, winning decisively with a score of 10-0.
However, they faced a challenge in their second encounter against Nhabe’s Western Dynamites, who initially took a 2-0 lead in the first half. Orapa United mounted a remarkable comeback in the second half through Dimpho Sedirwa and Candy Jautse, leveling the score.
Orapa United concluded the tournament with a 2-1 win against Francistown United, earning a total of seven points. Western Dynamites finished second with five points, followed by Francistown United with four points, while hosts Tornado ended at the bottom with no points. The Botswana Football Association Technical Development Officer for Women’s Football, Barobi Ngwako, remarked on the growth of women’s football in the region.
“Many teams that only had men’s squads now have women’s sides, indicating a broader interest and investment in the women’s game,” she noted.
The DTCB top four tournament is set for June 12-14 in Gaborone, where champions from the Northern, Southern, Eastern, and Western Blocks will compete for top honours.
