Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Over time, independent power projects (IPPs) have emerged as Africa\u2019s fastest growing energy sector structures, spreading in popularity across borders and meeting with a surfeit of investment as private sector backers gain comfort with the continent\u2019s liberalising power markets.<\/b><\/p>\n

Though up to now the IPP model has focused on a clutch of major markets \u2013 the likes of South Africa and Kenya \u2013 these privately financed, owned and operated projects are starting to capture new territory.<\/p>\n

The figures show a picture of steady growth. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), since 2000, 340 IPPs have been operating, under construction or reached financial close in 36 countries in Africa, representing 30 GW of installed capacity (of which about half are renewables based) and an impressive $61bn of total investment.<\/p>\n

IPPs are starting to scale up, with the pace of growth in renewables in particular pushing the envelope. According to IRENA, investments are now larger and dominated by renewable energy.<\/p>\n

Facebook\u2019s parent company, Meta, has announced the launch of \u201cNo Language Left Behind\u201d (NLLB), an AI program which will make digital content more accessible across 55 African languages spoken by more than half of the continent\u2019s internet users.<\/p>\n

Meta claims that the technology will provide state-of-the-art translations between over 200 languages worldwide \u2013 more than double the current number.<\/p>\n

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the new software \u201cwill enable more than 25 billion translations every day across our apps\u201d, bringing content from Facebook, Instagram and Wikipedia to millions of people in their native languages for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the future, imagine visiting your favourite Facebook group, coming across a post in Igbo or Luganda, and being able to understand it in your own language with just a click of a button\u201d, said Balkissa Ide Siddo, Facebook\u2019s public policy director for Africa, at the unveiling of NLLB.<\/p>\n

Going forward, Siddo said that \u201caccurate translations in more languages could also help to spot harmful content and misinformation, protect election integrity, and curb instances of online sexual exploitation and human trafficking\u201d.<\/p>\n

Moreover, Meta says that it aims to set a \u201cnew standard of inclusion\u201d as it helps to build the metaverse, holding out the prospect of everyone having \u201caccess to virtual-world content, devices and experiences, with the ability to communicate with anyone, in any language\u201d there.<\/p>\n

Boost for \u201clow-resource\u201d languages<\/b><\/p>\n

Language barriers prevent many Africans from either accessing or producing their own digital content \u2013 while 130m, 115m and 35m Africans speak English, French and Portuguese respectively, those who solely speak \u201clow-resource\u201d languages are unable to use social media to expand businesses into new markets.<\/p>\n

Meta\u2019s report defines a \u201clow-resource\u201d language as one which has produced negligible amounts of published content on the internet. Of the 55 African languages surveyed, just seven escaped this categorisation: Afrikaans, Modern Standard Arabic, Sotho, Swahili, Xhosa, Tswana and Zulu.<\/p>\n

Widely spoken languages like Yoruba (45m), Igbo (30m) and Fula (35m) are defined as \u201clow-resource\u201d, yielding poor accuracy scores in existing automated translations.<\/p>\n

Facebook boosts African reach<\/b><\/p>\n

Meta, formerly Facebook, has long had a close association with the rollout of internet services in Africa. Its Free Basics app, launched in 2013 as Internet.org, brings basic internet services to mobile phone users in a simplified, highly-accessible format and now boasts 100m users worldwide, many of them in Africa.<\/p>\n

Language barriers heighten the disparity between urban and rural internet penetration in sub-Saharan Africa. In West Africa, where 38.1% of urban residents have access to mobile broadband but just 7.1% in rural areas are connected, the prevalence of traditional languages outside urban centres means that rural citizens are less likely to engage with digital content even if they are able to connect to the internet.<\/p>\n
