Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Botswana Democratic Party\u2019s (BDP) former Member of Parliament for Mmathethe\/Molapowabojang, Alfred Madigele has dropped out of the race for the party secretary-general position to pave the way for Kavis Kario, The Monitor has learnt.<\/b><\/p>\n

This is ahead of the BDP going for its upcoming elective congress in August. According to information The Monitor gathered, Kario received blessings from some in the party’s leadership. Shaw Kgathi is the one that might challenge Kario, a former Cabinet member and MP for Selebi-Phikwe West.<\/p>\n

Again, his team is led by the current chairperson, Slumber Tsogwane who wants to retain his seat as he will be challenged by former MP for Selebi-Phikwe West, Nonofo Molefhi.<\/p>\n

His team also includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lemogang Kwape as the deputy secretary-general. Kwape will battle it out with Raymond Malinga for the deputy secretary-general position. The congress will be held at Tsabong village.<\/p>\n

For his part, Madigele said, \u201cIt is true I have since dropped out of the secretary-general position race and I stand to support Kario. I cannot say much on the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, The Monitor has learnt that Vice President Tsogwane made it clear to some BDP central committee members last week Wednesday that he supports Kario and his team.<\/p>\n

According to sources, the announcement made by Tsogwane to some central committee members may make other members, who were eyeing certain party positions, to withdraw.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlready some members had started to approach Kario to have him include them in his team. Currently, there is team Molefhi and team Tsogwane ahead of the congress,\u201d the source said.<\/p>\n

The source added that those who want to campaign independently would not make it because \u201cmost of the members prefer to align with these two teams\u201d.<\/p>\n

Some members believe that the central committee that will be elected in Tsabong needs strong members who will be able to unite the party and build structures that could help them win the 2024 general elections.<\/p>\n

Others want the issue of the employment of a secretary-general by the party to be debated at the party national council that will be held over the July holidays.<\/p>\n
