Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The Covid-19 pandemic is “far from over”, said the director of the World Health Organization (WHO) this Thursday (12th) in Geneva.<\/b><\/p>\n

“The new waves of the virus show once again that Covid-19 is far from over,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared at a press conference, adding that “as the virus advances, we must fight back.”<\/p>\n

The WHO announced that it has decided to maintain the pandemic as a public health emergency of international concern, following a recommendation made by the Emergency Committee.<\/p>\n

“The Covid-19 Emergency Committee met on Friday and concluded that the virus remains a public health emergency of international concern,” said the director-general.<\/p>\n

Concerned that the virus will continue to spread, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the number of cases will continue to rise, putting further strain on already overstretched health systems and professionals.<\/p>\n

The WHO Emergency Committee for the Pandemic stressed that the Omicron variant BA.4 and BA.5 of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus “continue to be responsible for waves of cases, hospitalizations and deaths worldwide. ” “.<\/p>\n

In addition, surveillance has been \u201csignificantly reduced\u201d in many countries, including testing and sequencing of the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, making it \u201cincreasingly difficult to ascertain the impact of variants on transmission and the effectiveness of counter-measures.\u201d measures”, warned the WHO official.<\/p>\n

There is still a “big disconnect in the perception of Covid-19″ between the scientific community, political leaders and the public in general”, which constitutes a challenge to “build community confidence” in public health measures, such as the wearing a mask, distancing and ventilating indoor spaces.<\/p>\n

According to data from the organization, cases of Covid-19 reported to the WHO have increased by 30% in the last two weeks, largely driven by the BA.4 and BA.5 strains of the \u00d3micron variant, but also due to the lifting of public health measures that had been adopted to contain the transmission of the virus.<\/p>\n

The Emergency Committee unanimously agreed that the pandemic still meets the criteria of an extraordinary event that continues to adversely affect the health of the world’s population and that the international spread of new variants of SARS-CoV-2 could have an even greater health impact.<\/p>\n

The experts of this committee admitted that the continuous evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, although inherent in all viruses, continues unpredictably.<\/p>\n

The Committee held its first meeting on 22 and 23 January 2020, and days later, the WHO Director-General declared that the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak constituted a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).<\/p>\n

It is responsible for recommending whether an outbreak constitutes a public health emergency, proposing temporary measures to prevent and reduce the spread of a disease, and managing the overall public health response, if necessary.<\/p>\n

PHEIC is declared on the basis of an “extraordinary, serious, sudden, unusual or unexpected event” with public health implications beyond the national border of the affected State and which may require immediate international action.<\/p>\n
