Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The African Development Bank (AfDB) plans to provide a credit of US$1.5 billion that will be used over the next four planting seasons to increase production of maize, wheat, rice and soy crops in Africa.<\/b><\/p>\n

The information was released today in S\u00e3o Jos\u00e9 (Costa Rica), by the African Union Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment Josefa Correia Sacko, at the Africa-Americas Ministerial Summit on Agricultural and Food Systems.<\/p>\n

The African diplomat said that “it is estimated to produce 37.6 million metric tons of these cereals, which will have an increase of about 30% in local production.<\/p>\n

He made it known that the increase in food prices that hits poor and developing countries the most, threatens to erase the gains made in development, even before the Covid-19 pandemic, as a consequence, reduced income and disrupted supply chains, including chronic and acute hunger increased due to these factors.<\/p>\n

Other factors pointed out by the commissioner that are at the base of the crisis have to do with conflicts, socio-economic conditions, natural risks, climate change and plagues.<\/p>\n
