Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Orapa Classic Cycle Challenge gathers momentum<\/b><\/p>\n

It\u2019s all systems go for the annual Orapa Classic Cycle Challenge.<\/p>\n

The charitable race by Orapa Cycling Club is slated for Sunday 7th August under the theme: Promoting Cycling Development Among the Youth.<\/p>\n

According to the club\u2019s chairman Moagi Sewawa, their sole drive is to raise funds to support underprivileged members of the community.<\/p>\n

He however said this year\u2019s emphasis is on the development of the youth in cycling and proceeds thereof will be used to support the Orapa Cycling Club Youth development program.<\/p>\n

\u201cYouth cycling in our country is still at an infancy stage, and the main contributing factor is monetary constraints since equipment and race participation is expensive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He revealed that proceeds from the previous Orapa Classic Challenges were utilised on a number of initiatives such as procurement of a photocopying machine and revision books to support learning of students, poultry businesses for the underprivileged, procurement of cycling equipment to promote the cycling sport development among others.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year we bought seven bicycles for the youth, and we are looking at looking at buying cycling equipment and spares to assist young cyclists as the sport is very expensive,\u201d said Sewawa.<\/p>\n

The Chairman said preparations for the next Sunday event are at an advanced stage with well known cycling clubs from as far as Jwaneng and Gaborone registering to support their cause.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not a club competition, but an individual sport. Anyone with a bike and right equipment can register to support this charitable cause,\u201d Sewawa told Voice Sport.<\/p>\n

Registration according to the chairman will be open until next Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re targeting all the cycling clubs across the country, and looking at at least 280 cyclists, or just under 300 and we expect to reach that number before deadline day on Thursday,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Registration fee for the 120km Elite, Veterans and Masters is P250, while Under 23 and Juniors will have to part with P200 and P150 respectively.<\/p>\n

The 60km Open, 60km Youth and Junior, and 30km ride are P200, P100 and P100 respectively.<\/p>\n

There\u2019s also a 10 km walk attracting a P50 registration fee, while the 10km Kiddies race (Under 14) is absolutely free.<\/p>\n
