Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The public service is currently bloated and has no job opportunities, says Vice President Slumber Tsogwane.<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing a kgotla meeting in in Mmadikola last Thursday, he said because government was operating with a deficit of P6 billion, banks were unwilling to lend it money to pay employees.<\/p>\n

It was therefore left to the private sector, including small and medium businesses, to create more job opportunities to help government reduce Botswana\u2019s high unemployment rate, he said.<\/p>\n

The vice president expressed concern about low productivity levels within the public sector and implored employees to be more productive and innovative.<\/p>\n

Mr Tsogwane said extension officers needed close supervision to ensure they offered good and appropriate services to rural communities.<\/p>\n

He said they should also ensure that they reported to their supervisors.<\/p>\n

Mr Tsogwane said public officers based in rural areas were well informed about their stations and were a better position to respond to issues raised by locals.<\/p>\n

The vice president appealed to Mmadikola residents to safeguard government property such as the Makgadikgadi game proof fence in which government had invested a lot of money.<\/p>\n

He cautioned residents against vandalising the fence noting that the initial one was destroyed by thieves intent on stealing satellite dishes installed on it.<\/p>\n

The Village Development Committee chairperson, Mr Kesarate Taetso had in his briefing complained about lack of employment opportunities.<\/p>\n
