Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>The rising number of road accidents in Botswana remains the country\u2019s biggest challenge with drivers’ attitudes cited as the major cause.<\/p>\n

The concern was expressed by Broadhurst Police Station commander superintendent Obusitswe Lokae after recording an accident, which occurred at the Mmashia junction on Friday morning.<\/p>\n

Lokae said the accident occurred at around 7.30am at the Mmamashia traffic lights after a BMW car collided with a Volkswagen Caravelle combi. \u201cWe suspect that one of the drivers failed to obey the traffic lights resulting in the crash. The BMW that was driven by a 33-year-old man had a 10-year-old passenger, a baby girl who sustained a fractured left leg.<\/p>\n

The duo was facing north while the Volkswagen Caravelle combi, driven by a 47-year-old man, was crossing the road from East to West,\u201d Lokae said. He stated that the little girl had also sustained head injuries and is currently hospitalised at Gaborone Private Hospital along with the Volkswagen Caravelle combi driver who had also sustained head injuries. \u201cInvestigations into the matter are ongoing to establish who amongst the two drivers caused the accident because the traffic lights were functional.<\/p>\n

However, the BMW driver escaped uninjured,\u201d he said. Lokae said motorists\u2019 attitudes toward key road safety issues such as overspeeding, drunken driving and overtaking risks, remain a major road safety concern.<\/p>\n

He stated that some accidents could easily be avoided if road users could exercise patience and pay more attention to traffic signs and regulations. \u201cBehaviours that drivers continue to display predispose them to road accidents and casualty rates. I am pleading with drivers to exercise patience on the road and avoid drunken driving,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
