Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Vice President Slumber Tsogwane is in Dakar, Senegal as the head of a delegation participating in a two-day agriculture summit which commenced.<\/b><\/p>\n

The delegation comprises Minister of Agriculture, Mr Fidelis Molao, Minister of Entrepreneurship, Mr Karabo Gare, Assistant Minister of State President, Mr Dumezweni Mthimkhulu and senior government officials.<\/p>\n

Ending tomorrow, the conference is the second edition of the Dakar summit on agriculture and agribusiness which brings together heads of state, development partners and the private sector to discuss food security in Africa and opportunities for harnessing the continent\u2019s food and agriculture potential.<\/p>\n

Botswana\u2019s presence at the summit signifies the country\u2019s commitment to addressing agriculture sector challenges such as insufficient food output as evidenced by the current import restrictions on certain vegetables and fruits aimed at stimulating local production.<\/p>\n

Mr Tsogwane\u2019s participation in the summit is deemed crucial to addressing agriculture improvement and value chain development related issues in Botswana as underscored by President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi in the 2022 State of Nation Address.<\/p>\n

The President ephasised the need for Botswana to create more opportunities for food security, diversification of the economy and empowerment through development of value chain clusters.<\/p>\n

The summit is held under the theme; Feed Africa: Food Sovereignty and Resilience and is co-hosted by Senegalese president, African Union Commission, African Development Bank and International Fund for Agricultural Research.<\/p>\n

According to a summit press release, African countries are expected to make measurable political commitments to implement policies designed to eliminate extreme poverty, hunger and malnutrition.<\/p>\n

The summit will further deliberate on ways of securing finance for agricultural development to achieve food sufficiency and involvement of the private sector in advancing agribusiness.<\/p>\n
