Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Selebi Phikwe children are a lot to be reckoned with, as five of the town\u2019s junior secondary schools made it to the top 10 outstanding schools in the just released 2022 Junior Certificate Examinations (JCE).<\/b><\/p>\n

The copper-nickel rich town also prides itself with Meepong Junior Secondary School, which has been sitting at position one nationally for two consercutive academic seasons.<\/p>\n

Other schools that made it to the top 10 are Phatsimo, Makhubu, Lebogang and Boikhutso junior secondary schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are happy to have five schools in the top 10, said chief education officer for Selebi Phikwe Sub-region, Mr Tshwarelo Hosia.<\/p>\n

He said Selebi Phikwe schools, just like others nationally, were faced with resource constraints, insufficient funding, inadequate laboratories and shortage of teaching and learning materials, but that they were able to rise above the challenges.<\/p>\n

He attributed the good performance to selfless teachers who went out of their way to increase teacher\/pupil contact even beyond working hours.<\/p>\n

He added that the towns pupils also had a high performance culture created by the school leadership.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool heads set high expectations because we believe in the ability of our learners to do well,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Mr Hosia said the sub-region also had a dedicated leadership that did not only focus on administration, but prioritised teaching and learning as well.<\/p>\n

He commended junior secondary schools in Selebi Phikwe for a sterling performance, but said more could still be done to improve the results.<\/p>\n

Two pupils from the town, one from Phatsimo JSS and the other from Lebogang, attained merit in their examinations.<\/p>\n

Active parental involvement, he said, also worked for Selebi Phikwe schools as parents were involved in fund-raising activities for the schools.<\/p>\n

He added that they bought learning materials for their children as well.<\/p>\n

Mr Hosia noted that all the 11 primary schools in the region performed outstandingly in the 2022 Primary School Leaving Examinations and that all three private schools attained 100 per cent pass while eight scored over 90 per cent.<\/p>\n
