Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is a critical provider of skills, knowledge and technology needed to drive productivity in a knowledge-based economy.<\/b><\/p>\n

Assistant Minister of Education and Skills Development, Ms Nnaniki Makwinja said this during brigades and technical colleges\u2019 class of 2022 graduation ceremony in Gaborone on Friday.<\/p>\n

Ms Makwinja said there was need for closer cooperation between TVET providers and industry so that graduates could be fully work ready upon graduation.<\/p>\n

She said there was no need for further training and retraining before the TVET graduates could contribute to growth of the companies employing them.<\/p>\n

Ms Makwinja said to enable TVET to produce ready-to-work graduates and also future proofing the skills of TVET graduates, there was need for the industry to be actively engaged to develop curriculum.<\/p>\n

She, however, said the TVET component was so crucial in contributing to job creation of the youth and also encouraged the graduates not to be job seekers but potential employers who would push the country towards economic diversification.<\/p>\n

The assistant minister emphasised that young people needed skills that met the demands of the private sector, adding TVET should not be seen to be an option for those that did not qualify for university admissions, but should take a leading role in tertiary education.<\/p>\n

Ms Makwinja commended the class of 2022, which had over 750 graduates for their achievement saying \u2018you should now be capable of making an impact in the industry hence the theme: Advancing TVET for Youth Employability through Stakeholder Engagement\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe also look at you as potential entrepreneurs in a position to leverage on existing opportunities and become job creators,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

She further reminded the graduates that the skills they had acquired during the course of training had the potential to turn their lives and the country\u2019s economy around. \u201cYou should leave this place today feeling like a better version of who you were yesterday and the industry should now be your playground to do however you please,\u201d Ms Makwinja said.<\/p>\n
