Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Gweta will this year get a water treatment plant for provision of potable water to the community.<\/b><\/p>\n

Briefing residents during a consultative meeting for the design and installation of the water treatment plant, Water Utilities Corporation (WUC) project manager, Mr Motshidi Mosweu said the plant would help address concerns from the community who had always felt the water had a nasty smell and was salty.<\/p>\n

There were also concerns of spillage of sewerage water into boreholes during the rainy season since the boreholes are located in the same area.<\/p>\n

Mr Mosweu, therefore, requested the Village Development Committee (VDC) to suggest an ideal piece of land where the plant would be built, adding that the land would also accommodate evaporation ponds for excess water and residues.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, Mr Mosweu said before the project takes off, Environment Impact Assessment would be done.<\/p>\n

He said already the tender was floating for those interested in taking up the project and expressed hope that before the end of the month, interested contractors would be taken for a site visit.<\/p>\n

In addition, he said the plant would be designed for Gweta village only, catering for the current population and 20 years to come.<\/p>\n

Mr Mosweu also stated that companies engaged in the project were expected to procure within the village to boost the local economy.<\/p>\n

He added that they would encourage companies to hire people on a 70:30 ratio of men against women since the project was labour intensive, also with priority given to locals.<\/p>\n

Appreciating efforts made by WUC to improve water services in the village, Tutume District Council chairperson, Mr Thatayaone Kehitile said feedback to the community was important, especially when problems arose during the construction of the project.<\/p>\n

He further urged them to monitor the project for it to be done within the set time and budget.<\/p>\n
