Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Education has the potential to transform the economic status of families, the Minister of Education and Skills Development, Dr Douglas Letsholathebe has said.<\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing Rakops Junior Secondary School pupils recently, on Wednesday, Dr Letsholathebe urged said pupils should elevate their educational performance to ensure better future.<\/p>\n

He said one\u2019s current background should and does not determine one\u2019s tomorrow.<\/p>\n

He urged them to face the challenges they were faced with in their educational journey head on, stressing that perseverance had its rewards,<\/p>\n

The minister also disabused them of the fallacy that their school\u2019s location justified them failing to produce good results.<\/p>\n

Dr Letsholathebe said Rakops pupils were better off because most of their teachers were trained, revealing that during his time, they were taught by people who were not well trained, but they persevered.<\/p>\n

He said he attended school in Tsamaya, but he was able to progress to doctorate level.<\/p>\n

He acknowledged the shortage of books and furniture in schools, but said government was working round the clock to address the situation.<\/p>\n

Dr Letsholathebe advised them to be willing to work hard to succeed, noting however that they also needed support from both teachers and parents.<\/p>\n

He said soon laptops would be distributed to pupils in junior schools to address some of the challenges faced in schools, adding that plans were afoot to have pupils focus on skills-based subjects that they excelled in from Form One.<\/p>\n

He called for discipline and further cautioned pupils against use of drugs as they could destroy one\u2019s life.<\/p>\n
