Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, has been elected Chairperson of the African Union (AU), further reaffirming the role the President has and continues to play in Africa\u2019s development. As the continent continues to grapple with the impacts of the COVID-19 and energy poverty crises, H.E. Macky Sall is set to take on the role in both a proactive and productive manner, ushering in a new era of growth and development in Africa.<\/p>\n

Elected during the Thirty-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the Union by Heads of State and Government of the AU, H.E. President Macky Sall will take over the position from H.E. Felix- Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, President of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With many of the continent\u2019s challenges that were faced in 2021 extending into 2022, H.E. President Macky Sall remains committed to continuing the progress made by H.E. President Tshilombo, including achievements seen among development programs under Agenda 2063.<\/p>\n

During his acceptance speech, H.E. President Macky Sall stated \u201cAs our Union celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, we can be proud of the progress made under major initiatives such as NEPAD, PIDA, APRM, Vision 2063, institutional reform, the Great Green Wall, the AfCFTA and more recently our coordinated response to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, our challenges remain numerous and pressing, notably in the areas of peace and security, the fight against terrorism, environmental protection, health and economic and social development.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the regional body responsible for spearheading Africa\u2019s development and integration in close collaboration with AU Member States, the AU is considered a key driver of Africa\u2019s socio-economic future. As Chairperson, H.E. President Macky Sall will be responsible for leading development programs, spearheading the continent\u2019s development through strategic decisions and policy implementation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thank you and assure you of our commitment to work together with all member countries in the exercise of our mandate,\u201d stated H.E. President Macky Sall, adding that \u201cI pay tribute to the founding fathers of the Organization. Six decades later, their luminous vision continues to inspire our living together and to illuminate our united march towards the ideal of African integration.\u201d<\/p>\n
