Africa-Press – Botswana. <\/strong><\/span>Gaborone City Council (GCC) is working around the clock to address the burning issue of poor storm water drainage. <\/b><\/p>\n

Addressing GCC full virtual council meeting on Monday, the city mayor, Mr Austin Abraham said the national Transitional Plan had considered their request to deal with the issue, adding that the design and construction of storm water drainage master plan was budgeted at P7, 875, 000.<\/p>\n

He said the project included study of existing drainage infrastructure and flood prone areas and made recommendations for effective and efficient drainage within the context of the proposed master plan, which would also guide subsequent infrastructure development.<\/p>\n

He said recent storms that swept through Gaborone, exposed serious deficiencies in the city\u2019s drainage infrastructure with many areas which previously were not known to flood now continually experiencing floods and erosion.<\/p>\n

Mr Abraham said he was hopeful completion of the project would address all flooding problems. Regarding the city’s illumination project, he said P5 000 000 had been set aside from the Road Levy Fund to install solar street lights at Extension 16 and Block 8.<\/p>\n

The tender for Block 8 had been awarded to the tune of P2 402 960 million while that for Extension 16 was due for award on March 24.<\/p>\n

A total of 1 090 solar street lights would be installed in three constituencies through the 2022\/2023 Community Constituency Programme (CCP), he said.<\/p>\n

Of these 380 would be installed in Bonnington South and Gaborone North and 330 in Gaborone Central, he said.<\/p>\n

Gaborone Central and Bonnington South tenders had already been awarded to the tune of P8 263 797 36 and P9 301 600 respectively.<\/p>\n

Mr Abraham said the tender for Gaborone North was at cooling off period after which the award decision effect.<\/p>\n
